Indoclassical Concepts Concert with Flautist Pravin Godkhindi and Tabla Player Haroon Samuel

Friday, May 10, 2024

Pravin Godkhindi will explore and embellish a raga of his choice in 3 stages or movements.

First will be The Aalaap: A free-flowing exposition, sans rhythm where you experience the beauty of the raga by itself. The second will be Jod and Jhala. Pravin will continue his exploration within the framework of a medium-paced and then a fast-paced pulsatile rhythm that builds to a crescendo before concluding. The third movement is Gat.

The tabla player, Haroon Samuel, will make his appearance. They use a melodic refrain called “Gat,” which is set to a rhythm cycle, as a framework and musical meeting point.

Together they interact and challenge each other and bring the house down!

Short intermission

After intermission, the artists will present light classical melodies.

Pravin Godkhindi Is a disciple of his late father, Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi. He started his training at the age of 3 and blossomed into a child prodigy and later an accomplished musician, composer and music director. He is the only Indian artist who can play the 8 ft long contrabass flute. The bass flute called the “Mandra Bansuri” is his invention. In addition to mastering the melodic and technical aspects of flute playing, he has studied the more intricate aspects of the art and science of rhythm under Vidwan Anoor Anantha Krishna Sharma, a mridangam maestro. He has represented the Indian bamboo flute at the World Flute Festival in Argentina. He is equally proficient in pure classical, fusion, and light classical genres. He is also the recipient of numerous awards for his flute playing and his music in films and TV serials. He is the brand ambassador for AKG/Harman, a leading Austrian microphone company. In addition, he has a Fusion band called Krishna.

Haroon Samuel Haroon is a tabla player of the Punjab Gharana. It is the oldest of the tabla traditions. Tabla accompaniment and tabla solo are two different skills. Haroon has been fortunate to learn these things from two different maestros. Parvez Paras Sahib trained him as an accompanist and Ustad  Hayat instilled in him, the intricacies of solo tabla playing. He has a School of Tabla in Lahore. It is our good fortune that he lives in the Capital District
