It Came from Schenectady and Union College Film Studies present Fleischer Cartoons! The Art & Inventions of Max Fleischer.

Fresh from its often sold out, two-week run at the Museum of Modern Art, ICFS and Union College Film Studies are excited to present the very best of the Max Fleischer’s jazz age cartoon innovations as the third and final installment in our “Performing Cinema” series. Disney’s mightiest competitor, Fleischer invented rotoscoping, “follow the bouncing ball,” and a great deal of the very language of cartoon art. Along with his brother Dave, Max’s massively popular creations include Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, and acclaimed adaptations of E. C. Segar’s Popeye and DC Comics’ Superman.

Join us as we experience these pioneering works of art, many of which draw from a wealth of new 4K restorations supervised by Max Fleischer’s granddaughter, Jane Fleischer Reid.

This event will be introduced by Patricia Wareh, Associate Professor of English, Union College, and – BE SURE TO ARRIVE EARLY – in order to enjoy a musical performance (starting at 6:30pm) by Carl Hackert, Program Director of the Hudson-Mohawk American Theatre Organ Society and one of New York’s most talented theater organists. Hackert’s performance partner for this event will be “George,” a magnificent digital recreation of George Wright’s famous Hollywood Philharmonic recording studio organ.
